Common Foot Ailments

Corns - are caused by the friction and pressure. They do not have roots and thecause is also often due to bone deformity.. They are like a concentrated callous.
Callouses are a symptom, not a disease, and the cause should be dealt with before the callouses can be cured. Chronic corns and callouses need periodic professional care; although sometimes surgical or orthopaedic measures may be necessary to effect a cure. Under no circumstances should one resort to home treatments - foot infections are dangerous.

Excess perspiration - causes foot odours. Daily bathing and regular application of a medicated foot powder (available from your chiropodist) can help in most cases. When these fail, you should visit a Chiropodist for professional advice.

Bunions - are the result of a weakness of the ligamentous andmuscular structures of the leg and foot. There may be a heredity tendency but factors such as stress and strain and shoe pressure may bring about this condition. If these joints are swollen and red and tender then consult your chiropodist, as these symptoms may be indicating the presence of bunions but also gout, arthritis or infection.

Warts - (Verrucae) can often be misdiagnosed as corns or callouses. A wart has its own blood and nerve supplies and are usually extremely painful (under lateral compression) and can spread if not treated.

Athletes Foot - is a skin disease resulting from a fungal infection. This fungus most commonly infests the feet as it thrives in warm, dark and moist environments - as found in shoes! Good foot hygiene will help prevent infection . Bathe the skin daily, keep dry (change hosiery often) and use a mild fungicide on the skin (cream) and in the shoes (powder).
